Featuring: Chappy Challenge Event
Runners and cyclists will take to the streets of the Scenic Rim next weekend to support school chaplaincy and honour the memory of a popular local rider.
The Chappy Challenge annual fundraiser for school chaplaincy is on again in Boonah on Saturday March 4.
Event coordinator and Scenic Rim cyclist Scott Bennie said the Chappy Challenge is unique in that it caters for the whole family and for both cyclists and runners.
“The running events are 5km and 10km and there are five cycle events ranging in length from 5km to 95km,” he said.
“There is even a kid’s event within the showgrounds that is suitable for younger children and parents with prams.”
Mr Bennie said the 95km ride has been renamed in honour Beaudesert local Darryl ‘Dazzle’ Dickson, who was tragically killed when hit by a truck while on a morning ride last year.
“Darryl was a huge supporter of the Chappy Challenge over the years and in 2016 he was the very first person to register,” he said.
“With the permission of his family, we have named the 95 kilometre cycle event ‘the 95K Dazzler’, we couldn’t think of a better way to honour him.”
The 95k Dazzler will take cyclists through some of the most picturesque country in South East Queensland, through Carney’s Creek and along Dwyer Ridges Road near Mount Alford.
“It’s not flat by any stretch,” he said.
“But the views will take your breath away, if the hills haven’t done that already.”
School chaplain at Beaudesert High School Jade Cocks said it was encouraging to see the community support chaplaincy and raise much needed funds and awareness.
“We are excited to be part of the Boonah Chappy Challenge this year and in particular to have riders in The 95k Dazzler,” she said.
“Many members of our school community knew and loved Darryl and it is wonderful that we can honour him and recognise the way he supported this event.”
People who wish to support school chaplaincy in Beaudesert are able to make a donation on top of the race registration fee.
The event begins at the Boonah Showgrounds with the longer rides starting at 6am and other events are scheduled throughout the morning.
Although registrations on the day will be accepted, participants are encouraged to register online prior to the event.
